MYTHS
Meditation
Myth:
Meditation is difficult.
Truth:
It’s actually not. In reality, meditation is easy and fun to learn. The techniques can be as simple as focusing on the breath. Just like anything else in life it takes practice.
Myth:
I would need to meditate for years in order to see benefits.
Truth:
Many scientific studies provide evidence that meditation has profound effects on the mind-body physiology within just weeks of practice.
Myth:
Meditation is a religious practice
Truth:
Meditation is an ancient practice and is not tied to any religion. Just like people use running to stay in shape people from different cultures have been using meditation as a way of dealing with stress and finding inner peace.
Myth:
Meditation is New Age nonsense
Truth:
There's nothing new about mediation. It goes back thousands of years. And unlike some unproven mind/body modalities, meditation has been exten sively studied and found to bring specific benefits, including reduced anxiety and depression.
Myth:
Meditation takes too much time
Truth:
Any amount of meditation can be helpful. Even if you spend 5 minutes meditating you will reap the benefits from it.
Visualization
Myth:
Visualization is just a waste of time
Truth:
Many studies have shown that people who visualize perform better because they have a clearer picture of what they are aiming for. It is much more easy and fun to head toward somewhere we know vs. wandering around and area blind hoping you will find your way.
Myth:
Visualization is just for athletes and entrepreneurs
Truth:
At one point, every athlete and entrepreneur was a normal person. The difference was them visualizing their goals and going after it. When you visualize, you can create that great result in ALL areas of your life.
Myth:
Visualization only works if you have a good imagination
Truth:
Like everything else, visualization comes with practice. The more often you practice visualization, the more vivid and detailed your dreams and goals can be. If you can close your eyes and picture a lemon then you can visualize!
Myth:
Visualization is the same as meditation
Truth:
Quite the opposite. Visualization is picturing your goal or ideal life while meditation is clearing your mind of any clutter. Despite being opposites, visualization and meditation go hand in hand. Once you clear your mind of any clutter, you can then picture your ideal life.
Myth:
If I visualize it will materialize in my life
Truth:
We can visualize all day long but without taking action nothing will happen. Therefore visualization and taking action need to go hand in hand.
Goal Setting
Myth:
All goals need to be big goals
Truth:
We need both. While our big goals are what we eventually want to achieve, small goals work as our stepping-stones to get there.
Myth:
I already know my goals
Truth:
While you might have your goals in your mind, not putting them on paper with a clear and specific timeframe would make them no different than just wishes.
Myth:
Goals should never change
Truth:
What might seem important to right now might not be a priority in the future. Your priorities and goals will change as you continue to grow.
Myth:
I should keep my goals to myself
Truth:
While you should never tell everyone you know about your goals, since too much negative feedback will bring you down, telling a couple people about your goals may help them keep you accountable for following through with them.
Myth:
Goal setting doesn’t work, life is too unpredictable.
Truth:
Life can be as predictable or as unpredictable as you make it. Setting goals can actually help make your life more predictable as you lay out a plan of where you want your life to be.
